So, you think you want your Aunt Betty to be your wedding officiant? She means a lot to you! It’s easy to become ordained! And, hey…it won’t cost anything! Those are great pluses, indeed, but there are some negatives as well. These are some of the things many people don’t think about when having a loved one, like Aunt Betty, officiate their wedding. Does Aunt Betty know how to write your ceremony? Does she know anything about getting your marriage license, let alone how to fill it out? Does she know what order everyone comes down the aisle in? Does she think on her feet if someone passes out, throws up or runs away from the altar? Is she a trained public speaker? Does she know the right voice inflection and how to project? And, is it possible that because Aunt Betty loves you so much, she might start crying at your wedding, while she’s delivering the ceremony?
These are all serious matters to take into consideration. When I’ve asked wedding and event coordinators how the typical ceremony goes when an untrained ordained minister performs a ceremony, the answer is usually, “TRAIN WRECK!”
If you would like a stress free wedding day, I urge you to hire a professional officiant.
Here are some important questions to ask a potential officiant:
- How long have you been an officiant?
- How many weddings did you perform last year?
- Do you have ideas for my ceremony and how it should go?
- Do you have a website?
- Do you have any testimonials?
- Would you consider meeting with us so that we can get to know each other?
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Entrust the care of your ceremony to a trained officiant.
