We had a chance to talk to Tanya Stirewalt from Everyday Moments Photography and asked her a few questions we thought you may like to know about. Here’s what she had to share with us:
1) How did you get started in photography?
I got started in photography from my Dad. He would take countless pictures of flowers and sunsets when I was a kid and we would go hiking together and take silly pictures of each other with flowers. My very first “gig” was taking my sisters senior pictures for her, when I was a sophomore in high school. Unbelievably, she loved them and today this is still one of my very favorite “shoots” as we had so much fun together taking them.
2)How would you describe your personal style of photography?
Not quite sure how to answer my personal style, but I absolutely love photographing people and capturing their emotions. I love spending an afternoon with newly engaged couples and capturing their love and touches, or with a newborn and family as they meet this new tiny joyous addition to their lives. What is better than capturing that first glimpse of Mom with tears in her eyes as she holds her sweet baby in her arms, or Dad’s beaming face seeing his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time? I could go on and on, but I know you all understand this feeling. It is so precious, personal, and I am just so pleased to be a witness to it.
3) Where do you find your inspiration?
Inspiration is everywhere, isn’t, just depends on the eye of the beholder. My greatest inspiration is in being a mother…I am thrilled that my daughter is finding her own passion for photography and I love setting up “assignments” for us to do together and then share our different “views” of the same capture. I lament often of how I need a permanent camera implanted into my shoulder so I can capture every precious moment of her life.
4) What is your favorite part about working with couples?
Couples are so much fun. I love that first opportunity to begin to get to know each other and simply be background to their time together. It is this time that allows me to see how they work together and what type of session might be best for them and what they are game for. I am silly and bold and have an outrageous sense of humor which often allows couples to just relax and show their real selves rather quickly. Capturing couples to me is like story telling, whether their love is loud and boisterous or comes walking softly on cat feet, there is a story that unfolds in every session.
5) If there was one thing you couldn’t do without, what would it be?
I could not do without my daughter. She assists me on just about every shoot I am on. I have been part of a photography coaching program for the past year and she has learned so much that she is often plays second shooter for me. She is also my runner and assistant during each shoot and has simply proven to be invaluable when working with young children.
6) Is there anything else we should know about you?
I am home grown to Central Oregon, and spent my youth clambering about the mountains and lakes that grace this beautiful place we call home. This has, of course, given me great insight to numerous “secret” locations that can make for a fabulous one of a kind shoot, if you are willing to trek a bit.
