In this Member Spotlight we got to catch up with Lori Tompos from Edge Hair and Makeup. Read on to find out more about Lori and what makes Edge Hair and Makeup special.
1) How did you get started in hair and makeup?
I always knew I wanted to be a cosmetologist -even when I was younger, I used to shampoo my barbies hair in my bathroom sink. But it took the help of my mother to encourage me to go to beauty school. While in beauty school I HATED doing wedding styles because they never turned out ‘perfect’ and I’m definitely a perfectionist. I later on took an advanced education training specifically on updos and I learned the specific way to achieve the look I wanted. In my early career I worked with another stylist at an Aveda spa that constantly encouraged my skill in the wedding industry. She would tell me all the time, that I was good at hair but that I was phenomenal at updos. 9 years later I got to do her hair and makeup for her own wedding.
2) Where do you get inspiration for your work?
I get a lot of my inspiration for my work from Instagram and Pinterest. Hair and makeup by Steph, and Martin Parsons are huge hair idols of mine. Nicole Wagner from Powder Inc. in Portland is a huge makeup artist idol of mine.
3) What is the most important item you bring when you do bridal hair and makeup?
The most important makeup item I bring with me are my brushes. I have about 50 of them and they truly make or break your work and looks. And second would be false lashes… AMAZING.
4) What trends do you see coming for 2016?
Trends I see coming are natural ‘lived in’ imperfect boho waves, and flower crowns or weaved in natural flowers.
5) Why do you think hiring a pro is important for hair and makeup?
Because we are CONSTANTLY in the wedding industry and atmosphere. We know what the trends are, and we know how to achieve them. We also know how to deal with the self-centered bridesmaid or the over-controlling step mom. There is a huge difference between someone who does 2 weddings a year, and someone who does 70+ weddings a year.
6) What’s your favorite part of doing bridal hair and makeup?
My favorite part of my job, is helping my client see how truly beautiful she really is on the most important day of her life. I think every woman deserves to feel breathtakingly beautiful.
7) What should a bride look for when hiring a hair and make up artist?
Pay attention to the referrals from friends and family and to the credits of wedding photos that you like. Also ask the other wedding vendors you have hired. They are constantly seeing the work of other vendors in the area, and can give you an honest opinion/critique of the vendor that you are looking at hiring.
