It stands to reason that as a chalkboard artist one would think that I am simply especially exposed to the rise of chalk in weddings, events, and even in just basic home décor. However, when I began my business Chalked., these items that I’m now seeing at Michael’s, Target, and even Fred Meyer were hard to come by, few and far between, definitively seasonal on the smallest scale. Now you can pick up your very own chalkboard for your everyday household lists at Hobby Lobby for $12.99.
This trend extends to weddings in the extreme. Where before it was “kitsch” and “crafty” to have chalkboards at your wedding, it is now more commonplace and more relatable on all levels. Chalkboards can transform a wedding from just another event to an event to remember with unique touches that cannot be reproduced in the same way twice.
Whether you go with a professional like myself to perform your typographical décor, or if your friend’s sister is especially fond of lettering, you’ll now notice a plethora of options for your every decorating need. Two years ago, when I got married, we considered spray painting wine bottles with chalk paint and then gave it up as a bad thought. Today, you can buy them in bulk, premade at Hobby Lobby and at Michael’s.
Here’s some fun trends to use at your wedding:
The Chalkboard Wine Bottle:
This is an excellent piece either as the main attraction as a customized centerpiece. They can be an alternative to your standard guestbook – just use acrylic paint pens and it’s permanent! Or use them as sideline attractions to label items or direct your guests!
The Chalkboard Drink Decal:
Forget wine charms, these are way cuter and go perfectly with the new trend of mason jars! Buy some of these cute pre-made labels at Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s or support an artist on Etsy and label away!
The Chalkboard Table Runner:
What a unique way to tell your guests what your menu is or to thank them! Give them a little something to read while they’re dining!
The Chalkboard Gift Tags:
This is always an awesome, personalized touch to any party favor. They can also double as labels for water jugs, beverages, dancing shoes, or other items at your event!
And of course, The Chalkboard Frame:
While still not classified as “traditional,” this is definitely becoming a much more common staple at weddings. Cheaper than paper goods like programs and menus to let your guests know who’s who and what’s what, and a great way to customize and add a unique look to your wedding, the chalkboard frame has many uses!
